Goombay Festival

October 16 and 17, 2026 Bahama Village, Key West, Florida

Goombay is Key West's celebration of its Bahamian roots: two days of Junkanoo bands, reggae and soca stages, island food and packed streets in Bahama Village, the historic neighborhood settled by Bahamian families in the 1800s. It is free, it is outdoors, and it is the best eating weekend of the fall.

The 2026 festival runs Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 along Petronia Street. Goombay traditionally opens Fantasy Fest week, but it is its own thing: family-friendly, culture-first, and rooted in the neighborhood rather than the costume crowd.

The food is the headline

Come hungry. Goombay's vendor rows are the real deal: conch fritters, cracked conch, jerk chicken off smoking drum grills, curries, fried fish and Bahamian sides you will not find on a Duval Street menu. Locals plan their weekend around specific stands. Walk the whole stretch once before you commit your first plate.

What you will see and hear

Junkanoo is the heart of it: costumed processions with cowbells, whistles, drums and horns rolling through the crowd, the same tradition that fills Nassau on Boxing Day. Around it, stages run reggae, soca and island acts through both days, and the streets close to cars so the whole neighborhood becomes walkable party.

  • Β· Saturday night is the peak. If crowds are not your thing, go Friday evening or Saturday afternoon.
  • Β· Walk or bike. Parking near Bahama Village is scarce on a normal day and hopeless during Goombay.
  • Β· Bring cash for the food vendors. Lines move faster.
  • Β· It is genuinely family-friendly, especially during the day. The costume chaos of Fantasy Fest comes later in the week.

The story behind it

Goombay started in 1979 as a grassroots neighborhood festival, funded early on with little more than donation jars and volunteer sweat, to celebrate the Bahamian heritage that built this end of the island. Fantasy Fest grew up around it and the two now share a calendar week, but Goombay keeps its own identity: no tickets, no gates, just Petronia Street doing what it has done for more than four decades.
