Conch Republic Independence Celebration
In April 1982, the Border Patrol threw a roadblock across US 1 at Florida City and treated everyone leaving the Keys like a smuggler. Traffic backed up for miles, tourism choked, and Key West got creative: Mayor Dennis Wardlow declared the island independent, named it the Conch Republic, declared war on the United States, surrendered about a minute later, and demanded a billion dollars in foreign aid. The roadblock came down. The republic stayed.
The Conch Republic Independence Celebration marks the anniversary every year with roughly ten days of events in late April, always spanning April 23. The 2026 edition ran April 17 through 26; dates for 2027 have not been posted yet.

The events you should not miss
The celebration runs on Key West's particular sense of humor. The Great Sea Battle sends schooners and workboats into the harbor to fight with water cannons and stale Cuban bread, with the Coast Guard playing along as the enemy. The Duval Street drag race is exactly what it sounds like in this town: performers in heels sprinting a block of Duval. Bed races send teams pushing decorated beds down the street.

The story, slightly longer
The 1982 roadblock was real and so was the damage: visitors stopped coming rather than sit in a 19-mile backup. After the city's legal challenges went nowhere, Wardlow stood in Mallory Square on April 23, read the proclamation of secession, broke a loaf of stale Cuban bread over the head of a man in a Navy uniform, surrendered, and applied for a billion dollars in foreign aid and war relief. The stunt made national news, embarrassed the federal government into pulling the roadblock, and handed Key West an identity it has cheerfully refused to give up for four decades.
